Kathleen Herbert - A History Of The Receding Horizon

Director: Kathleen Herbert
Sound Design: Shervin Shaeri

Artist Kathleen Herbert explores the nature of time in her new digital video installation ‘A History Of The Receding Horizon’. This fictional journey follows a group of astronomers attempting to unfold the essence of the universe by weaving together past, present and future timelines. The story is set in Kielder, Northumberland, where the largest man-made lake and the largest man-made woodland in the UK sprawl beneath breathtakingly clear skies.

Mirroring the visuals, the sound straddles the seeming incongruity and striking juxtaposition of man-made structures set within vast, desolate, semi-natural landscapes. Muted, delicate and somewhat ambiguous, the soundscape suggests rather than explains, complementing the physical vista with carefully considered auditory sparseness. The result is a piece that fascinates and entrances; ultimately offering more questions than answers.
